Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday, with his public enthusiasm for Taylor Swift becoming a memorable part of his campaign. The physician’s Swiftie identity attracted attention online, though the issues he focused on included affordability, healthcare access and AI regulation.
One of his most popular campaign TikToks, posted this summer, showed El-Sayed dancing on a balcony in an American-flag cowboy hat, jeans and a black V-neck shirt. The clip used Swift’s “You Belong With Me (Taylor’s Version),” with the campaign rewriting the lyrics to take aim at his opponent, Mike Rogers. It received 5.7 million views, and commenters identifying as Swift fans said they planned to vote for him.
El-Sayed won the Democratic nomination in August, about a month after the video appeared. Swift did not endorse him, but the campaign was not forced to remove the song. Asked about her response, El-Sayed said, “Here’s the interesting thing, they never forced us to take it down.”
His connection to Swift also came up shortly before Election Day on Liz Plank’s Boy Problems podcast. El-Sayed said his daughter is “a huge Swiftie” and defended Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, which had received a mixed response from critics and fans. He praised Swift as “one of the most self-understanding artists of our time” and said the project showed her taking a creative risk beyond her usual style.
Swift fans responded warmly to his comments, and fan accounts celebrated his victory on social media after the race was called in his favor. The reactions referenced Swift’s songs and eras, turning El-Sayed’s fandom into a running theme among supporters.
