Ashanti is re-recording her debut album, Ashanti, ahead of its 25th anniversary. The singer said the new version will allow her to own her masters and will feature clearer sound while preserving the record’s classic feel.

She described the continued popularity of “Foolish” as a blessing, particularly when audiences sing along to the song in arenas. Ashanti also said she hopes her decision encourages other artists to take control of their work earlier in their careers.

Discussing her husband, Nelly, Ashanti praised his generosity, genuineness and positive outlook. Their main domestic disagreement, she said, concerns the thermostat: she prefers a warmer room, while he likes it colder. They compromise at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 21C.

Ashanti recalled meeting younger fans who discovered her music long after its release. One girl she recently met knew every word to “Foolish” and told the singer that her father had named her after Ashanti.

She also spoke about acting, including her role in John Tucker Must Die. While she enjoys the work, she said music gives her more control, particularly when she writes her own songs, whereas acting requires her to portray a character created and directed by others.

Her most chaotic stage moments have included fans jumping up to hug her during performances and a bodysuit snapping off onstage. On that occasion, the band played while she went backstage to fix her outfit.

Ashanti said she always disinfects the telephone and remote when she arrives at a hotel. She named SZA and Summer Walker as artists she would like to collaborate with, adding that she values music centred on women’s empowerment.

The singer said she has learned to trust her instincts, even though artists can second-guess themselves. Her young son will accompany her on the Australian tour, and she described balancing motherhood with international travel as demanding. She cooks his food from scratch, including organic sweet potatoes, rather than requesting the typical snacks and drinks associated with a tour rider.

Ashanti also revealed that she is a good cook, with Chilean sea bass, rice and vegetables among her preferred dishes, and said she is skilled at impressions. Her Australian tour begins in Perth on 9 November.
