Blade Runner will return to the big screen in Rome on Sunday, November 8, with The Avex Ensemble performing Vangelis’s score live. The screenings, presented by the Romaeuropa Festival in collaboration with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, are scheduled for 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the Auditorium.

The event, titled “Blade Runner Cine-concert,” features the 2007 Final Cut, supervised by director Ridley Scott and screened in high definition. The film will be presented in English with Italian subtitles, while the ensemble performs the electronic score in sync with the images. The UK-based international group specializes in reinterpretations of electronic film music.

Inspired by Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the 1982 film blends science fiction, noir and philosophical themes. It is set in a version of Los Angeles in 2019 and follows Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford, a former police officer brought back to track down four replicants who have escaped from extraterrestrial colonies and returned to Earth.

Vangelis’s music is woven into the film’s storytelling, from the electronic opening to “Blade Runner Blues” and the “Love Theme.” The score was composed by the Greek musician, a pioneer of electronic music and former member of the progressive rock group Aphrodite’s Child.
