C. Tangana has released “Milko Freestyle,” a short rap track that marks his return to solo music after three years without a new song or album. The Madrid artist, whose real name is Antón Álvarez, shared the song and its video on YouTube, presenting it as a release with Agorazein, the rap group he began his career with in the early 2000s.
Although the track invokes the group, the video and performance do not feature its other members: Sticky M.A., Jerv.AGZ, I-Ace and DJ Fabianni. Agorazein last released an album in 2016 and is set to play four sold-out shows at Madrid’s Movistar Arena on November 15, 16, 17 and 18.
The song returns to the rap style of C. Tangana’s early work, departing from the flamenco and other rhythms associated with later releases. Its lyrics look back on his career and the changes in his personal life, including the birth of his child with photographer Rocío Aguirre. The video shows Aguirre and the baby.
Álvarez also addresses the death of his friend and collaborator Óscar Botello, the Mexican rapper, producer and visual artist known as Milkman, who died in February. The track includes a passage reflecting on their relationship and Botello’s time in hospital.
The lyrics also point to new music in progress, with Álvarez rapping about writing another record in Madrid. The November concerts will be his first with Agorazein in a decade, and all four dates have sold out.
