Curry Barker has revealed that an extended version of his horror film Obsession contains around 20 minutes of additional footage, and said he would like to release it.
Written and directed by Barker, Obsession was released earlier this year and has become one of the highest-grossing independent films ever. The movie was made on a budget of $750,000 and has grossed more than $525 million worldwide, according to the available figures.
Speaking to Rolling Stone about a potential alternate version, Barker said he was satisfied with the current edit and did not have changes he wanted to make to the footage already used. However, he added that there was “a longer version of the movie” he would like to release.
Barker also clarified that the existing version should be considered the director’s cut, saying he had done what he wanted “for the most part.”
Obsession is described as a take on the “monkey-paw” horror subgenre. It follows Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, after she becomes fixated on Bear, portrayed by Michael Johnston, when a wish goes wrong.
Navarrette has said she is “totally open” to appearing in a sequel if Barker decides to develop one. Discussing Nikki’s future after the film’s ending, the actor said the character would be beginning a grief process following experiences involving loss, a lack of autonomy and events beyond her control.
