Dave Grohl says he broke down in tears after performing “Highway to Hell” with AC/DC at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on October 2. The Foo Fighters were supporting the band at the concert, where AC/DC singer Brian Johnson invited Grohl onstage later in the evening.

Speaking to New Zealand radio station The Rock, Grohl recalled that he had joined AC/DC onstage after filling in for Taylor Momsen at two shows. Momsen, the singer of The Pretty Reckless, could not attend those dates, and Grohl said he was able to join the band for the second performance.

Grohl said his wife was watching from the side of the stage as they played “Highway to Hell.” Afterward, he walked off and began sobbing. He described the performance as one of the most significant full-circle moments of his life, recalling that watching AC/DC’s concert film “Let There Be Rock” at age 11 had changed his life.

He also said AC/DC’s stage was the loudest he had ever stood on, louder than Motörhead or any other band, in his view. Earlier in the concert, Grohl had spoken about his long-standing admiration for AC/DC during Foo Fighters’ set.
