Dave Grohl says he walked offstage and broke down in tears after performing AC/DC’s ‘Highway to Hell’ with the band at MetLife Stadium. Speaking to New Zealand radio station The Rock, he described the experience as one of the most meaningful moments of his life.
“My wife was on the side of the stage as we played ‘Highway To Hell’. I walked off stage and I broke down in tears, sobbing like a baby,” Grohl said. “I was, like, ‘That is one of the most full-circle moments of my entire life,’ and I will never forget it.”
Foo Fighters had first joined AC/DC’s tour as a substitute for The Pretty Reckless, opening for the band in St. Louis on September 8. Grohl called that appearance “literally a dream come true”. Although it was initially intended to be a one-off, AC/DC later invited Foo Fighters to open another show, the tour-closing concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
During AC/DC’s set that night, singer Brian Johnson revealed that Grohl had asked to join them for their 1979 hit. Grohl played guitar and sang on the song. The concert had been rescheduled from September 25 because of severe weather.
Grohl also praised AC/DC’s volume, describing their stage as the loudest he had ever stood on and the band as “the loudest band in the world”. He recalled discovering the group as a child through their film ‘Let There Be Rock’ and said their performance changed his idea of what rock and roll could be.
The MetLife Stadium appearance closed AC/DC’s two-year ‘Power Up’ tour, which began in Germany in May 2024 and supported their 2020 album of the same name. The band have not announced their next plans. As he left the stage, Johnson told the audience: “We hope we’ll see you again.”
