Hailey Bieber has described the emotional challenges she experienced with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) after the birth of her son, Jack Blues. In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, she said the condition brought particularly intense symptoms and that there is too little public discussion and research about it.
“After I had my son, I struggled with [PMDD] a bit,” Bieber said. She described pregnancy, childbirth and the period after having a child as an intense and meaningful experience, adding that her symptoms continued postpartum.
PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome. Its symptoms can begin in the week before menstruation and may include depression, anxiety, mood swings, irritability and difficulty concentrating.
Bieber previously discussed her diagnosis on the SHE MD podcast, saying she was diagnosed six months after giving birth. She recalled that the emotional changes before her period felt much more intense than the PMS she had experienced previously, and that some symptoms eased once her period began.
She said talking openly about PMDD makes her feel less alone and hopes it will encourage conversations that help others feel less isolated. Rhode has announced a three-year, $5 million partnership with the Foundation for Women’s Health to support medical research, education and care in areas that are typically underfunded.
