Jason Isbell has pledged to record an album of songs by Alabama artists if Democratic gubernatorial nominee Doug Jones wins the state’s governor’s race. “We will most happily record and release an Alabama Blue album, covering our favorite Alabama artists, if Doug Jones wins the governor’s race,” Isbell wrote on social media, adding, “Easiest decision of my life.”
The Alabama-born musician made a comparable promise in 2020, saying he would create a covers album if Joe Biden won Georgia. After Biden carried the state, Isbell released Georgia Blue in October 2021. The record featured songs by Georgia artists and guests including Brittney Spencer, Brandi Carlile, Julien Baker and Amanda Shires, who also created the cover art. Proceeds went to Georgia-based charities Black Voters Matter, Stand-Up Georgia and Fair Fight.
Isbell has also appeared at campaign events for Jones, including a rally in Mobile in September and the campaign’s kickoff in Birmingham. At the Mobile event, he voiced confidence that Jones could win and praised his work and commitment to the people he hopes to represent.
A Jones victory would make him Alabama’s first Democratic governor since Don Siegelman, who served from 1999 to 2003. The source report described the contest as close, with Republican Tommy Tuberville holding a slight lead in recent polls.
