Jimmy Kimmel compared Republican losses in the US midterm elections to the infamous RED Wedding episode of Game of Thrones, using his show to joke about the Democrats’ gains and President Donald Trump’s response to the results.
Democrats won eight Senate seats previously held by Republicans, including seats in Texas, Ohio, Georgia and Iowa, and took control of the chamber. They also took the House. Trump accepted the results on Truth Social but blamed the losses on not appearing on the ballot, saying Republicans “would have won in a landslide” if he had.
“After all the talk about Nicki Minaj’s ass, Jon Husted’s ass…the only ass on Trump’s mind tonight is the one that just got handed to him,” Kimmel said. He added: “The blue wave made landfall, and now the Red Wedding begins.”
The Red Wedding is a memorable season-three Game of Thrones episode in which several main characters are ambushed and killed. Kimmel’s reference to Minaj followed her public support for Trump and appearance at one of his rallies, where Trump commented on her backside.
Other public figures also reacted to the results. Bette Midler said she was “overjoyed,” Henry Winkler wrote that they proved “dreams do come true,” and The Chicks performed with red fans bearing the words “Fuck Trump.”
