Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus have reunited as Junior Boys to unveil their latest studio album, titled The Gore. Scheduled for release on February 12 through City Slang, the project blends themes of grief and nostalgia with distinct influences from horror cinema. The album is headlined by the lysergic techno single "Underneath the Moon," which is accompanied by a music video directed by artist John Smith that features aesthetic elements reminiscent of TV static.
In a press release, Greenspan explained that the lead single draws deep inspiration from the 2022 horror film Skinamarink. To replicate specific effects found in the movie and pay homage to the ephemeral nature of analog recording technology, he utilized old tape loop techniques on a vintage Tascam tape machine. The album itself was written over several years following the deaths of Greenspan's father and a close friend. He describes The Gore as a twin to their previous work, Waiting Game, characterizing it as a polarized articulation of silence, serenity, terror, and time in both circular and unending forms.
Although no official tour dates have been announced yet, the duo has organized album playback events for early next year in Brooklyn, Seattle, and Toronto. These gatherings will commence with screenings of the experimental film Wavelength and conclude with a Q&A session featuring Greenspan. The tracklist for The Gore includes eleven songs: Funny How Time Slips Away, Night Service, The Tabernacle, Hineni, Underneath the Moon, Holding Back Secrets, Ligeia, Kill Baby Kill, Yizkor, The Gore, and Randman Blues.
