Lou Diamond Phillips has discussed his new crime drama Gangland, the possibility of returning to Young Guns and the second season of HBO’s The Chair Company in a conversation with Kyle Meredith. In Gangland, Phillips plays Teddy Sharp, a tribal police officer whose methods are questioned but whose commitment to his community is central to the story.

Phillips said the screenplay’s authenticity drew him to the film, noting that its writer had firsthand experience as a tribal police officer. As an executive producer, he brought in Marcus Red Thunder, his longtime technical adviser on Longmire, to help shape the production. The film was shot on Cheyenne and Arapaho land in Oklahoma over 18 days.

A scene featuring a herd of 600 bison was added after director Vincent Grashaw encountered the animals while scouting locations. Phillips also said Indigenous audiences have responded to the film with conversations about cycles of violence and addiction.

Phillips has read the screenplay for a proposed third Young Guns film and said he does not understand why it has not yet been approved. He described the script positively and also expressed interest in revisiting his supernatural thriller The First Power, which has gained a cult following.

Meanwhile, Phillips is filming the second season of The Chair Company. He said the new season is “crazier than ever,” adding that his casting in the series surprised him.
