Miriam Mehler and Rafael Primot star in “Prova de Vida,” a comedy opening at Teatro Tuca in São Paulo’s Perdizes neighborhood. Mehler plays a 90-year-old retiree who visits a public office after her pension is suspended, where she meets a frustrated employee played by Primot. Their encounter begins tensely but develops into a connection as they talk about life.
Directed by Marco Antônio Pâmio, the 65-minute play is intended for audiences aged 12 and over. Performances are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m., through December 13. Tickets cost R$140 and are available through Sympla.
Another new production is “On Your Feet!,” a musical about Gloria Estefan, played by Camilla Camargo. The show follows the Cuban-born singer’s personal life and career, including her rise in the American music industry and her role in bringing Latin music to audiences around the world alongside her husband, Emilio Estefan. It features songs including “Conga,” “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You” and “Get On Your Feet.”
The musical opens at Teatro Claro Mais in Vila Olímpia. Its run continues through December 20, with performances on Thursdays and Fridays at 8:30 p.m., Saturdays at 4:30 and 8:30 p.m., and Sundays at 4 and 8 p.m. Tickets start at R$50 through Uhuu.
Other theater openings include “A Avó Inventada,” a solo by Ana Paula Lopez that uses magical realism to imagine a better past for her grandmother, who died at 45 after facing illiteracy, a forced marriage and a lack of medical care. The production runs at Sesc Vila Mariana through December 5.
At Teatro Estúdio, “Acesso” follows a woman waiting for her girlfriend to receive care in a public hospital emergency room. As she confronts fear and helplessness, she recalls memories and gives voice to people around her, including an exhausted nurse, an injured app-based motorcycle courier and a candy seller who has been stabbed. The production runs through December 22.
“Interior,” at Sesc Avenida Paulista, places the stories of four actors alongside those of four manual workers, exploring different ways of life. It is scheduled through December 13. “True West,” by American playwright Sam Shepard, also opens in the city. The play brings together successful screenwriter Austin and his troubled, wandering brother Lee, who revisit old resentments and their wish to trade lives. It runs at Teatro do Núcleo Experimental through December 13.
Theater returns also include “Segunda Chance,” starring Nany People as Yvone, a woman whose carefully managed routine is interrupted when she mysteriously finds herself in an unfamiliar place and begins questioning her choices. Performances are scheduled at Teatro Sérgio Cardoso on November 6 and 7.
Dance offerings include the Saint Petersburg Classical Ballet’s “The Sleeping Beauty,” presented at Teatro Liberdade on November 9 and 10, and “Saturno,” a solo by dancer Renan Martins. Set to pop music, “Saturno” imagines a fictional party through which Martins evokes dances, personal memories and figures from the collective imagination. It runs at Sesc Consolação through November 15.
