The San Carlo Theatre in Naples is celebrating 289 years since its founding. The opera house marked the anniversary with a post on its social media channels, commemorating its inauguration on November 4, 1737, at the initiative of Charles III of Bourbon.

In its message, the theatre described the venue as a symbol of Naples and a cultural reference point, as well as a custodian of enduring beauty. It also called the San Carlo the oldest opera house still in operation.
