Pierre-Olivier Costa has resumed his position as president of the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (Mucem) in Marseille following the expiration of his suspension period. The former cabinet director for Brigitte Macron, who was appointed to lead the prestigious museum in November 2022, announced on Sunday, November 1, that he returned to his functions at midnight after being suspended since June 30. Costa stated his intention to report to his office on Monday to make decisions, delegate signatures, and resume the museum's operations.

The suspension was initially ordered by the French Ministry of Culture to restore a climate of trust within the institution amid significant social tensions and conflicts with trade unions. In a letter sent to Minister Catherine Pégard at the end of June, union representatives had denounced a "deleterious" atmosphere, citing numerous dysfunctions and unacceptable facts attributed solely to inappropriate actions by the museum's leadership. The Ministry confirmed that Costa's suspension period officially concluded on the evening of October 31.

Anne-Marie Le Guével, who served as interim president during this period, informed staff members of her departure and Costa's reinstatement. Despite his return, legal proceedings continue against him. An investigation by the General Inspection of Cultural Affairs (IGAC) was opened regarding reports of "malaise" within the Mucem. Simultaneously, a criminal investigation into allegations of moral and sexual harassment was launched following a report filed under Article 40 of the Code of Criminal Procedure by the Ministry of Culture. Costa asserts that he has not yet been heard in this criminal case.

Costa noted that he had almost no contact with his supervising ministry during the four-month suspension, suggesting that the expiration of the deadline implies the authorities have little or nothing to reproach him for. With two years remaining on his mandate, he intends to honor his term and claims a "very good" record. A general assembly involving museum employees is scheduled to take place on Monday.
