Spike Lee says the RED New York Yankees cap that became part of Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst’s signature look began with a request he made to New Era in 1996. In an interview with Variety, the director recalled wanting a red cap to go with a Yankees jacket he had bought, but being told by the company that it did not make them.
Lee said he contacted then-Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, explained what he wanted, and Steinbrenner called New Era. The company then made Lee a red Yankees hat. Lee connected the request to the 1996 World Series, when the Yankees had lost the first two games to the Atlanta Braves; the team went on to win the series.
Asked whether he had invented the red Yankees hat, Lee said teams had previously worn caps in their team colors and called the red Yankees cap the start of something new. He also joked that Durst “didn’t have it before me,” crediting New Era’s hat with his own request to the company.
