Thousands of supporters at James Talarico’s election night gathering in Austin erupted in cheers as networks projected the Democrat’s victory over Donald Trump-endorsed Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race. The crowd later celebrated another major result: Gina Hinojosa’s win over three-term Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

The celebrations at the Long Center included chants of “U-S-A” and “Si Se Puede,” along with hugs, tears and music. For many in attendance, the results marked a breakthrough after decades of Republican dominance and repeated Democratic defeats in statewide contests.

The victories extended well beyond the Senate and governor’s races. Democrats also won the lieutenant governor and attorney general offices, along with the comptroller, railroad commissioner and agricultural commissioner positions. They also took control of the state House of Representatives.

Some Republican voters backed Talarico as a rejection of Paxton. David Maxwell, a lifelong Republican and former Texas Ranger who had spoken out against Paxton, told Rolling Stone that Talarico had presented himself as representing all Texans rather than only his party.

In his victory speech, Talarico promised to serve Texans who had not voted for him and called for repairing divisions across the state. Supporters at the gathering said they hoped Democratic leadership would address issues including corruption, environmental rules, housing affordability and public education.

Celebrations continued into Wednesday morning around Austin, including near the Texas Capitol. One legislative staffer described the mood as “euphoria,” saying he had thought a Democratic breakthrough in Texas was still years away.
