Donald Trump denied responsibility for Republicans’ poor showing in the 2026 midterm elections, arguing that the candidates themselves had failed to make their case. His comments came as results pointed to losses for the party, including the Texas Senate race, which several news networks called for Democrat James Talarico.
A White House official told Fox News that “candidate quality matters” and said Trump had promoted many candidates more effectively than they had promoted themselves. The official also said the president’s resolve to oppose the “Radical Left” would grow stronger.
Trump made his own response on Truth Social at 10:37 p.m. ET, writing that he had not been on the ballot and claiming that, if he had been, Republicans would have won “IN A LANDSLIDE!” In an interview with The New York Times that night, he said he was “absolutely willing to accept” the results.
The report linked the difficult political climate for Republican candidates to Trump’s policies and public standing. It cited his war in Iran, tariffs and broader instability as factors that had unsettled the global economy and pushed up prices for gas and consumer goods. Some candidates who had previously sought his support were also trying to distance themselves from him during the campaign.
Trump’s party now faces the task of responding to the losses with two years remaining in his final term, while the president has shown little willingness to accept personal responsibility for the outcome.
