BAND-MAID released its three-track single “SPIN” on Oct. 28. The title song was written for the ending theme of the anime BEYBLADE X Bey Kingdom Arc, and the band’s five members discussed its creation in an interview with Billboard Japan.
Guitarist KANAMI said the production team asked for parts that children and adults could sing together. She built a chorus hook around the words “spin, grin, don’t give in,” with band members adding backing vocals to signal the singalong section. The group also incorporated recorded Beyblade sounds: KANAMI asked guitarist and vocalist Miku Kobato to capture the sound of the spinning tops colliding, which she did during a vocal session.
KANAMI said she wanted the track’s structure to feature plenty of twists while maintaining the speed associated with Beyblade. Bassist MISA aimed for a line that listeners of different ages could dance to, using more octave playing than she typically does and changing the feel across sections. Drummer AKANE described shaping her parts around the song’s rapid pace, building tension before the chorus and giving the longer chorus a steadier foundation.
The recording also gave Kobato a larger lead-vocal part than usual. Vocalist SAIKI wrote a section for her in the second half of the second chorus, asking her to sing it as cutely as possible. KANAMI said the moment highlighted the contrast between the band’s two vocalists.
SAIKI said “SPIN” was among the title ideas from the start. While writing the lyrics, she revisited Beyblade and framed the words around the sequence and emotions of a battle. She said the song will also have an all-English version and is due to be localized into different languages over about a year as it accompanies the anime.
The interview also touched on BAND-MAID’s summer festival performances. At Summer Sonic, the band reunited onstage with Dani of The Warning for a collaboration. Kobato said The Warning’s Pau and Ale watched from the side of the stage, while SAIKI said seeing the group perform in Japan helped energize BAND-MAID before its own set.
