Marcello Veneziani’s new book, “Homo Alien,” examines the implications of artificial intelligence and its potential impact on humanity’s future. Published by Marsilio, the essay runs to 266 pages and is priced at 18 euros.
Veneziani places the discussion within a broader transformation that includes what he describes as the decline of humanism, alongside advances in technology, androids, biotechnology and increasingly pervasive digital devices such as mobile phones. The book also considers concerns about humanity’s effect on the planet and the growing preference for animals.
According to the book’s presentation, artificial intelligence began as an external tool intended to enhance human intelligence but is increasingly viewed as a possible substitute for it. Veneziani asks what drives this process, how it is developing and where it may lead.
“Homo Alien” also considers how people might respond to the advance of artificial intelligence and protect the human dimension. The essay addresses a debate that, in Veneziani’s view, has been growing for years and is likely to become increasingly significant.
