Michael Mann was hospitalised on Saturday, October 31, after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a gun range in Los Angeles. The 83-year-old filmmaker was later treated and released in stable condition.
A representative for Mann told The Hollywood Reporter that the weapon “accidentally discharged while holstered”, causing a superficial injury. The Los Angeles Police Department said the incident occurred at around 4pm and that its investigation determined the shooting was accidental.
According to TMZ, Mann was attempting to secure the firearm to his body when it unexpectedly discharged. The publication also described him as an experienced target shooter of several decades.
Mann has directed 14 feature films, including the 1995 crime thriller Heat and the 2001 biopic Ali. He is currently working on a sequel to Heat, based on his 2022 novel Heat 2, although the project is still believed to be in pre-production.
In September 2025, Mann said he was looking forward to possibly filming the sequel that year. Speaking to NME in 2023, he described Heat as a “huge brand” and said the novel had become an instant number-one New York Times bestseller after its release.
