Fender/">Sam Fender has recorded a version of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” for John Lewis’s latest Christmas advert, earning praise from the band’s frontman, Mick Jagger. The advert stars Kristin Scott Thomas, known for her role in “Slow Horses.”

The recording was made in Tyneside, Fender’s hometown. It features a choir from John Spence Community High School in North Shields, where Fender once studied, alongside brass players from the Easington Colliery Band.

Fender described reworking the song as a privilege and said the children’s choir was recorded with pupils from his former school. He also noted the involvement of the Easington Colliery Band in the brass arrangement.

Jagger said he was pleased to hear Fender had chosen to cover one of his songs and praised the result. “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” co-written by Jagger and Keith Richards, first appeared on The Rolling Stones’ 1969 album “Let It Bleed.”

Released through Polydor Records, the cover is available as a 7-inch single and CD through Fender’s official store. All net proceeds will go to Teenage Cancer Trust.
