Mick Jagger has praised Sam Fender’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” saying he was pleased to hear the singer take on the song. “I think he’s done a great job with it,” Jagger said in a statement.
Fender recorded the rendition for a U.K. retailer’s Christmas advertisement. The version is about half the length of the original and features a children’s choir and brass section.
Fender produced and recorded the track in Tyneside, England, with bandmates Joe Atkinson and Dean Thompson. The choir was made up of pupils from his former school, John Spence Community High School, while the brass parts were arranged with the Easington Colliery Band. Fender called it a privilege to rework a song by what he described as a legendary band.
Fender released his latest album, “People Watching,” last year. It won the Mercury Prize, and Fender also received BRIT Awards and an Ivor Novello Award for his songwriting that year. His announced dates for 2027 are a European run called the Proper Massive Stadium Tour.
