At an election-night gathering of the New York Young Republican Club, campaign committee chairman Mario Nicoletto called on party leaders to take responsibility for the losses and pledged to recruit more Republican voters. With television screens showing poor results for Republicans, he also promised to work toward taking New York City back in 2028.
The gathering came as Republicans suffered sweeping defeats across several states. The account says that, by Wednesday morning, Democrats had gained Senate seats in Maine, Iowa, Ohio, Texas, South Carolina and North Carolina, while President Donald Trump had lost the party’s majority in both chambers of Congress.
Some young Republicans said the party had failed to offer a clear message on affordability. Alexis, a 26-year-old club member, said she wanted to buy a home and start a family but could not, and called for Republicans to do more to address those concerns. She said the party’s focus on immigration did not resolve her frustration over the decision to go to war with Iran.
Despite the losses, club members largely rejected the idea of blaming Trump or abandoning MAGA. Becky Oliveira, the club’s design chairwoman, argued that older advisers and the donor class around Trump should be held responsible instead. She also said the club gave members a place to connect with people who share their views, regardless of who wins national elections.
Nicoletto warned that sidelining MAGA would risk making the Republican Party irrelevant, saying the movement had been central to its electoral support over the past decade. He said he wanted Republicans to stand by Trump, while acknowledging that he did not know what would happen next.
