Journey is due to close its “Final Frontier” farewell tour on Nov. 28 with a homecoming show at San Francisco’s Chase Center. But recent comments from founder and guitarist Neal Schon suggest the band may not be finished after all.

Schon said on Facebook that completing 110 shows in 2026 and playing extended “Evening with Journey” sets had brought the members closer together. He described the tour as shifting from “The Final Frontier” to “The Long Goodbye,” adding that the band would let its connection with fans help shape what comes next.

Keyboardist Jonathan Cain, who had previously described the tour as a closing chapter, has also sounded less certain about retiring. Speaking to Ultimate Classic Rock, he said the strong fan turnout had made him consider whether the band might continue, though he added that Journey wanted a rest and would see what happened after the tour.

The band is already scheduled for a 2027 appearance at Stagecoach. That booking was originally meant to take place this year but was postponed after rain disrupted the festival, so it had seemed possible the date would be a brief encore. Schon’s latest comments, however, point to wider discussions about Journey’s future.

One possibility is that Journey continues touring with its current lineup. Another is that singer Arnel Pineda leaves. Before the farewell tour began, Pineda told Rolling Stone he had considered quitting because of personal difficulties and concerns about the schedule. Schon confirmed that Pineda had expressed doubts, while saying the singer had been a “warrior.” Pineda could still decide to stay, but his departure would leave the band needing a new lead vocalist or a different approach.

Journey has also recently shared the stage with Hugo Valenti, a singer known for his resemblance to Steve Perry and for fronting Journey tribute acts. Valenti joined the band for two songs at two shows in Japan in August. The performances have prompted speculation that he could be considered for a future lineup, though no such plan has been announced.

Other possibilities include searching for another singer, or continuing without a replacement for Pineda. During the current tour, keyboardist Cain, drummer Deen Castronovo and keyboardist Jason Derlatka have each taken on vocals at points in the show. The band could also pursue a separate project: Schon has trademarked the name Journey Beyond and hinted that it could be used for a future venture. Its potential lineup is unclear.

A full retirement after the tour and the Stagecoach appearance remains possible, but the band’s recent remarks leave its plans unresolved. Journey has not announced what it will do once the “Final Frontier” dates are complete.
