Nicki Minaj’s former lawyers are seeking a default judgment of $295,605, saying the rapper has not paid an outstanding bill for legal services, fees and interest. The firm, Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani, renewed its request in court on Tuesday, the same day Minaj appeared at a polling station in Derry, New Hampshire, to support Republican candidates.
The firm represented Minaj in a copyright infringement lawsuit alleging that her song “I Lied” copied the instrumentation and beat of “onmysleeve,” a copyrighted song by Julius Johnson. That case ended in a private settlement and was dismissed.
In its latest filing, the firm said Minaj breached their legal agreement and had not responded to its separate lawsuit seeking payment, which was filed in March. The lawyers say she was served more than 30 days ago and are asking the court to award them $295,605. A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 16. Minaj’s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Rolling Stone.
Minaj’s New Hampshire appearance took place outside a polling station in Derry, where she posed for a photo in front of a campaign sign for Anthony DiLorenzo, a Trump-endorsed Republican who lost his congressional bid to Democrat Stefany Shaheen, according to NBC10Boston. Police accompanied her at the stop.
The visit followed Minaj’s appearance with President Donald Trump at a rally in Michigan the previous week, where she led the crowd in a chant of “We love Trump.” At that event, she said she was concerned about children being “bombarded with sex changes” and offered to support Trump if he sought a third term.
The filing is not Minaj’s first dispute involving an unpaid debt. In January, she paid a $500,000 default judgment to a security guard who accused her husband, Kenneth Petty, of assaulting him backstage at a 2019 concert in Germany. The payment came as Minaj narrowly avoided the court-ordered sale of her Los Angeles mansion, valued at $20 million in the report.
