Philip Roth’s “American Pastoral” is returning to bookshops in a new translation by Matteo Codignola. Adelphi’s edition is due out on November 10, with the release prompting a nationwide reading initiative organized by Feltrinelli to introduce readers to the novel again.

The program will involve 15 Feltrinelli bookshops in 15 cities: Arezzo, Bologna, Brescia, Florence, Mantua, Milan, Palermo, Pistoia, Rome, Salerno, Savona, Turin, Trento, Varese and Venice. Events will bring together readers, writers, scholars and literary communities for meetings, conversations and book-club gatherings focused on Roth’s work.

First published in 1997, “American Pastoral” won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1998 and is among Roth’s best-known novels. Through the story of Seymour Levov, known as the Swede, and his family, the book explores the collapse of the American dream, generational tensions and the divide between personal ambitions and wider social change. Its themes also include identity, family and disillusionment.
